Each year, SMART recruits, screens, trains and manages over 10,000 volunteers. We also provide children with new, soft cover take-home books every month—more than 125,000 books are given away during the school year.
At each SMART site, the program is staffed by local volunteers, and SMART provides an annually updated toolkit of materials. A paid staff member oversees the program.
Altogether, children receive 28 weeks of proven, one-on-one reading support and 14 new books, at a cost of about $300 per child. Thanks to our volunteers in each community, we're able to keep costs low.
